PREPARATION OF ARRIVAL

Two weeks before charter starts we shall send you final BOARDING INSTRUCTIONS (name of the boat, pier of marina), and we will reconfirm you the meeting point, SAILING IN BLUE's representative name and his mobile telephone number so you can be assisted accordingly. At this time we should have received from you:

  • Flight number, arrival time, final number of passengers
  • Crew-list (passport numbers, full addresses, emergency phone numbers)
  • Copies of skipper''s and co-skipper's licences (2) or sailing resumes
  • Provisioning list completed (if client wishes so)

LATE ARRIVALS

For arrivals after 18:30, we strongly recommend that you should ask us to arrange a transfer service from the arrival airport directly to the yacht.

PROVISIONING

Supermarkets or smaller grocery stores are available in all bases and departure points at a walking distance. In many bases a transportation service from a local supermarket is provided free of charge. Provisions can be delivered by us directly to the yacht and can be paid on the spot, only if we receive a provisioning list at latest 10 days before embarkation.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation from the airport to the harbour and from the harbour to the airport can be arranged in advance. We can provide a bus (or a minibus), limousine or taxi, all at an extra charge, payable in Greece directly to SAILING IN BLUE upon embarkation.

EXTRAS

All extras such as skipper, hostess, windsurf, spinnakers/blisters, should be ordered at least one month prior to embarkation. We will try to honour last minute requests, but cannot guarantee availability.

CHECKIN IN YOUR YACHT

According to the contract the embarkation time is at 17:00h but most of the times the yachts are ready for charter quite earlier.

When you will arrive at the departure base, you should proceed to the meeting point where a briefing, will take place. During the briefing we will inform you of the weather forecast possibilities, hazards close to the marina, delivery and return procedures, itineraries etc. We will also inform you how to proceed in case of an emergency or problems with the yacht and where/how to seek for help. Settlement of the security deposit guarantee & any other financial matters will also take place (if not already done).

Please note that port authorities may demand to see skipper and co-skipper's license or their sailing resumes, so please do not forget to carry this short of documentation together with you. When the briefing is over, the base manager will lead the crew to the yacht, where the responsible person of the yacht will go through the inventory list and explain all technical things onboard. The so-called "acceptance statement" or hand-over form should be then signed by your side, where any existing minor damages to the yacht should be reported. The time you need to take-over the yacht is part of your rented charter time.

CHECKOUT FROM YOUR YACHT

According to the contract the disembarkation time is at 09:00h. All clients are kindly advised to be back to the port of disembarkation the night before. Check out time should be pre-arranged in case of an early flight back or other reasons. The base manager together with the captain is checking the yacht with the same inventory list they have used during check-in. The client, along with a "questionnaire" for our services, must sign a final accounting statement.

What to bring with you

No matter where your holiday destination may be, they have a number of things in common: the sun, the sea and the fact that you will need to live for the duration on a yacht. There are a few items you should not forget to take with you, as they will make your life on board easier and safer.

So, I recommend that your personal luggage be carried in a strong duffel bag, large enough to carry all your needs. They come in two types - the old naval style kit bag, open at the top only and the type that has a side zip and a couple of carrying handles. Luggage And Duffel Bags are available on this site. A small padlock is a sensible precaution. Below is a list of recommended equipment and clothing and the Pack It Up Book will greatly assist you with your packing.

Clothing

  • a pair of light weight casual trousers or jeans
  • a pair of better trousers and a dressy shirt, a dress, so that you can visit a club or casino, good class restaurant or night spot - smart casual
  • Sweatshirt or woolen sweater for the evenings
  • 2-4 cotton T-shirts
  • 1-2 pairs of loose fitting shorts or skirts
  • A light weight long-sleeved shirt, particularly if you are prone to sun burn - cotton is best
  • A light weight wind breaker jacket
  • A waterproof jacket with a hood
  • a tracksuit - for early morning or late evening use
  • enough socks and underwear
  • 2 swimming costumes
  • Large towel
  • A pair of deck shoes (preferable) or rubber soled running shoes
  • a pair of sandals - for those with "sweaty" feet !
  • a wide brimmed sunhat, wide enough to cover the face and neck
  • Sunglasses -not forgetting the retaining "string". Electric Digit Sunglasses - Polarized altare very good for sailing. Also very good are Maui Jim Koa Sunglasses - Titanium Polarized alt, thought a bit expensive
  • A Lexan Travel Flask, for those shore excursions
  • Explorer Trek alt, a day bag - for shore trips- to carry essentials such as toilet requisites, cameras, etc
  • ...2 or 3 large plastic bags to separate clean from dirty laundry
  • Money belt
  • sewing kit needles, cottons, safety pins, etc.
  • Toiletries - soap, toothpaste, shaving foam, wet hankies, etc

In addition to the above clothing and personal equipment, you should take:

  • Camera (still or video) and a good supply of films for both. You can not guarantee being able to buy your particular brand locally. A good, strong, waterproof bag for your electronic equipment. It is only too easy to get water ingress whilst yachting !
  • A good supply of books, sketch pad, pen, chessboard, pack of cards, etc
  • Although the charter yacht will usually be equipped with all the necessary navigation equipment, experienced charterers often like to bring along their own binoculars, handheld GPS and/or VHF. A Swiss army knife is also a useful tool to have with you

Tip: Don't forget that plugs vary from country to country still, and that most yachts are not fitted with an inverter, so if you don't want to buy a 70-Watt Power Inverter altto charge your electronics onboard, you must bring the appropriate adaptors, so you will be able to charge your mobile phones, or cameras in most restaurants, bars, etc.

Every vessel of the Sailing in Blue fleet is fully equipped for charter. Apart from provisioning, stowing your personal possessions, you could step aboard and leave the dock without a further thought. You should bring your own beach towels, sun tan lotion, sun hat and so on, but that's about it!

Safety

All yachts should be equipped with sufficient numbers of life jackets, usually of a standard size. If you are not standard size, or especially for small children it is wise to bring your own Life Jackets alt. This situation needs to be carefully clarified with your charter agent BEFORE you leave for your holiday.

Personal medical supplies - make sure you bring a sufficient quantity of drugs and medicines you are taking. Drugs are not always known by the same name in all countries and you may not be able to get fresh supplies. If you are worried then take with you your doctors prescription to show to the local pharmacy just in case.

Do I need to hire a professional skipper?
Sailing in Blue is in the position to select, recommend and hire on your behalf a professional skipper for as many days as you wish. Even if you are an experienced sailor, you may still require the services of a professional skipper to make your cruise more relaxing and benefit from the skippers' local knowledge. There is a set daily fee (130 € per day) for the professional skipper regardless of the number of people on board. Please remember that the professional skipper needs to be provided with his own cabin, as he is obliged to sleep on board.
Do you provide boat briefings?
The chartered and his or her party will be given general briefing covering the local cruising grounds. Questions about navigation, anchorages, prevailing conditions, or any part of the desired itinerary can be answered. A more specific boat briefing aboard the yacht will then be given, covering all the operating systems, including rigging, electrical system, water system, windlass, stove, dinghy, outboard and emergency systems.
What is the charters schedule?
All charters begin at 17:00 on the day of departure and typically end at 09:00 on the day of arrival. However you will be required to return to base on the last evening of your charter since this time is necessary between charters to ensure that yachts are always delivered to the next charter in perfect working order.

Weekly charters usually begin and end on Saturdays for multiples of seven days. We will try to accommodate your wishes for different days of the week and uneven periods of time, such as a ten or twelve-day charter.
What qualifications do I need to charter a bareboat sailing yacht?
To charter a sailing yacht in Greece it is necessary for two crewmembers (skipper and co-skipper) to have sailing certificates proving their competence. In any case, at least one certificate/license should be available. This certificate can be any kind of paper issued by a "yachting" authority such as sailing club, sailing school, yachting/sailing association, established charter companies, etc.
The license of the co-skipper only can be equally replaced by a simple self-declaration form, where the co-skipper declares he has sailing experience. You may also be required to submit a sailing resume that will enable us to assess your ability to sail in safety. Sailing in Blue reserves the right to insist that chartered hire a professional skipper if their sailing skills are not judged sufficient.

Click here to see an example of the declaration form that the 2nd skipper will have to sign in case he has not a sailing license
Booking a boat

In order to make the reservations as smooth as possible, Sailing In Blue has prepared the following note describing the usual procedure of booking a bareboat (both for sailing or motor yacht) charter for your yachting holidays in the Greek islands.

STEP 1 - REQUEST

Please give us:

  • your full name
  • dates or period required
  • ports or sailing area desired
  • number in party or preferred type/size of the yacht
  • and any special request you might have at this stage.

Please note that departure & returns of charters are usually scheduled for Saturdays. Duration of charters is 1 or 2 or 3. full weeks.

One-way charters are many times possible between Sailing In Blue charter bases in Greece, according to the availability planning, and generally apply to 14 or more days of charter and for yachts of 36 feet or bigger.

The more information we get from you, the more appropriate choices we propose. Usually you can expect an answer within the same day. Very often our answer includes more than one available yacht, her equipment, prices and discounts - ALL to meet your requirements.

STEP 2 - OPTION

After you are informed about available yachts and prices, and are really interested in one or more yachts you should tell Sailing In Blue to keep the yacht(s) for you. In such a case we will keep one or at maximum two of the previously offered available yachts under "option" for a maximum period of 7 days. This means the boat is blocked for you for one week - until your final decision is made. If you do not confirm the booking during this period of time, this "option" will automatically be cancelled. Please note: In case the option is asked during the high season (end July - Mid October) or if an option is asked a few days before the commencement of every charter, then the duration of the "option" is less than 3 days.

STEP 3 - BOOKING

When you consider your booking fix and final, please confirm this in written to us by sending us the dates, bases, exact price, extras and other special requirements or useful information. We shall then reconfirm the booking immediately to you by giving you a charter code number. In your future correspondence, please always refer to the charter code. You will receive by e-mail the contract and all necessary payment and charter information.

PAPERWORK / CONTRACT / INVOICE

Right after we provide you with Sailing In Blue confirmation and charter code number reference, we will also send you by e-mail:

The contract signed by us (Charter Party): After you sign her , you should send it back to us , by e-mail or Fax

An empty crew list for you to complete and forward back to us.

The "Info Letter" with all necessary details , Bank Account etc.
